Upcoming Events in BSD

This article explains some upcoming events in the BSD world. Information
here is thought to be accurate at the time of writing. Mileage may very.
FreeBSD:
- September 15th marked the date when 3.0 went into BETA mode
(3.0-BETA), a one month beta testing stage will occur.
- October 15th is the scheduled release date for FreeBSD version
3.0. This release will feature a number of enhancements. New
advancements in the operating system range from ppb
(Parallel Port Bus), extended Linux emulation, improved VM
(Virtual Memory), SMP (Symmetric Multi- Processing), new ELF
binary format, CAM (Common Access Method) SCSI access layer,
and improved filesystem performance through a new feature called
Softupdates.
- Along with the creation of 3.0-RELEASE on October 15th, the reopening
of the FreeBSD X11 Desktop Theme Contest will also take place. The
contest will be based around FreeBSD 3.0.
Prizes will be furnished by Walnut Creek CDROM.
OpenBSD:
- Theo de Raadt will be speaking on a panel with Eric Raymond
at an ACM conference in Champion-Urbanai, Illinois..
- The OpenBSD team is gearing up for the 2.4 release in December.
This will include security patches, support for the FAT32
filesystem, and many - many other changes.

- OpenBSD has fully integrated AFS client support.
- Mozilla has been ported to OpenBSD.
NetBSD:
- The NetBSD 1.3.2 cdroms have SOLD OUT!
The CDROM contains complete NetBSD 1.3.2 source code, binaries for
Amiga, i386, SPARC, Alpha, Atari, Pmax, Sun3, Arm32, mac68k,
mvme68k, and VAX. The CD also includes full package source.
- BeBox, MacPPC, OfPPC, and Pc532 switch to UVM.
