BSD News, December 1998OpenBSD 2.4 CD-ROM released December 1stFreeBSD 2.2.8 is ready FreeBSD Mall Opens, Professional Support Services Available PicoBSD distributed with French magazine Good report on FreeBSD at Comdex
The OpenBSD 2.4 CD-ROM is now available. With this release, the OpenBSD project continues to fulfill one of its major goals, to produce a major release every six months. This release makes the installation process smoother than ever before, driving the configuration from a few key files. For a complete list of the changes since the 2.3 release, see the project changes page. OpenBSD is a robust and secure multi-platform UNIX-like operating system that includes many security and cryptography features not bundled with other operating system distributions. You can order the CD-ROM on-line through the secure web ordering system. If you are outside North America, you can order from suppliers closer to you.
The end of the month was a busy period for the release team at FreeBSD as well. On the 29th November, the last version of FreeBSD release 2 was completed. FreeBSD 2.2.8 comes out six weeks after the release of FreeBSD 3.0. So what's all the fanfare about? Well, to be honest, there isn't much fanfare. FreeBSD 3.0 is where all the action is, but there's so much new stuff in 3.0 that you could run into problems. If you're running a high-availability system such as an Internet server, you might want to wait before taking the plunge. If that's the case, than FreeBSD 2.2.8 is for you: it's the latest and greatest stable version of FreeBSD. The price for the standard 4 CDROM set from Walnut Creek is $39.95. The 4 CDROM set with ``The Complete FreeBSD'' book is $69.95 FreeBSD may be downloaded free from the internet or purchased on 4 CD-ROMS from Walnut Creek. For more information see http://www.freebsd.org. To order the 4 CDROM set see http://www.cdrom.com.
On 28 October 1998, Walnut Creek CDROM opened the FreeBSD Mall web site. The site offers FreeBSD CDROMs, books, promotional items, news, links and information for related FreeBSD solutions, and a shopping cart with secure ordering. Professional FreeBSD support services are also available through the FreeBSD Mall. Support is available for any level of demand, from the individual user, to medium sized businesses and organizations, to large corporations. Support services may be purchased on a case-by-case basis, or as a renewable annual contract. FreeBSD is a UNIX-like operating system that runs on PC hardware. It features full Internet capability, reliability, multitasking, and security. It powers the massive ftp.cdrom.com download site, and the popular Yahoo! web directory service. PicoBSD 0.31 was included in the CD-ROM of the November issue of the French magazine ``Programmez!'' (which means ``Program!'' in English). The magazine is relatively new (this is the 4th issue) and is devoted to programming languages such as Perl, Java and Visual Basic. They seem really open to open-source software and to BSD because they have already distributed OpenBSD on CD-ROM. You can contact them (even in English).
PicoBSD is a version of FreeBSD
which runs in minimal systems, including a version that runs from a single
floppy disk.
There is a good report on the Walnut Creek booth and FreeBSD at the Linux Today website: http://www.linuxtoday.com/stories/1005.html The first half of the report is on Slackware Linux, the second half is on FreeBSD. The report mentions a number of companies using FreeBSD, the advantages of the Berkeley licence, stability and ``The Complete FreeBSD'' Well worth a read for some positive FreeBSD press from one of the more widely read Linux web sites.
