John, can you, perhaps give an ETA for the updated utility? Any hope for
the source-code (or, if HP is paranoid, a mixed source-binary port a'la
x11/nvidia-driver)?

I can't really give an ETA on that, but it is on my to-do list.  Do
you have a preference for which OS release and architecture?  (You
mentioned 6.0/amd64?)
