I have a copy of FreeBSD 2.0 released through Walnut Creek on CD-ROM. It is
my intent to build several systems that will run both this BSD from one drive
and variants of DOS/Windows from a second HD. Questions:
1. As cost is a primary concern, I had hoped to build E-IDE base systems
using a Mitsumi CD drive and I/F. As the 2x Mitsumi's are no longer
available and the 4x are "pricey", do I have any non-SCSI based alternatives?
2. If I have CD-ROM support under DOS/Windows (e.g., Soundblaster/CD (SB))
for the purposes of installing BSD, do I even need CD-ROM support in BSD?
Does the installation fully complete before re-booting under BSD control or
will it require additional access to the CD drive?
3. The folks at Walnut Creek thought that a driver for SB support might be
available. If this is true would it provide me with an alternative to the
Mitsumi? Would I even be able to incorporate the new device driver into the
CD-ROM based installation process? IF so, where can I get a copy and would
you please help me with an outline of the procedure?
4. As my target system will have two HDs, one for DOS and one for UNIX,
would it be possible to:
- Use SB support in Windows to setup a minimum BSD installation
partition
- Add the SB device driver to /dev in the installation partition
- Continue the BSD installation from the new partition
Your help is greatly appreciated!!!
