set hw.ata.atapi_dma=1

it should let you it install.

Doug Barton also posted a similar email. He suggested the following...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
hw.ata.ata_dma="1"
hw.ata.atapi_dma="1"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So, it looks like set hw.ata.atapi_dma to 1 and if that doesn't work set
both hw.ata.ata_dma & hw.ata.atapi_dma to 1 and retry. So far, it looks
like AOpen CD-Rom drives need hw.ata.atapi_dma set to 1 for things to jive
right.

Then after fbsd 4.6 is installed you'll need to add the "set line" to your
/boot/loader.conf.

Both emails can currently be found at:

Cheers,
  Greg
